Sunday 23rd October mac Productions You Strike the Woman You Strike the Rock Celebrating Black History Month
Devised and written by Phyllis Klotz, Thobeka Maqhutyana, Nomvula Qosba, Xolani September, Poppy Tsira, Itumeleng Wa-Lehulere
On August 9th 1956, 20,000 South African women marched to Pretoria to protest about the pass laws. The pass, an Africans-only identity document, was identified by the protestors as a ‘badge of slavery’. The march forms a backdrop for this new play which centres on the stories and songs of three of the women. The title is taken from the song that became the marchers’ battle cry.
The play received significant recognition when it was first written in the 1980’s. In 1997 it was voted best play in South Africa and has been performed all over the world. We are proud to present this revival as a celebration of the role of South African women in their struggle for freedom. Few plays have been written about the role of black women and even fewer by them.
The piece is poetic, visual and physical.
Foyer Event Arrive early for a pre-performance concert by Gbubemi Amas & Niyi Beecroft. More music will follow the show.
